Dragon Bridge
Certainly you have heard the legend about an old Greek mythological hero Jason, and the Argonauts, who stole the Golden Fleece. Escaping on one of the inflows of the Ljubljanica River their ship got stuck in the swamps located in the place where now Ljubljana stands. They decided to continue the journey afoot, carrying the dismantled ship on themselves. What they didn’t know is that the swamps were also a home to a beast – the bloodthirsty dragon, that spared no chance to fill its stomach with fresh meat and attacked the crew. Fearless Jason reacted promptly. He stood up against the dragon and defeated it. Jason thus became the first man to cross the swamps, and set foot where Ljubljana stands today. The beast, known as the Ljubljana Dragon is now the symbol of the city, depicted also on Ljubljana’s coat-of-arms.The Dragons guard the city to this day watching over the bridge in front of you. Don’t worry though, and cross it, the dragons don’t bite anymore. Nonetheless they do have a few legends of their own. You may see them wagging their tails when a virgin passes by. Or even hear them growl and show their fangs when young couples kiss on the bridge. That’s why young men sometimes call it the “Mother-In-Law Bridge”.The Dragon Bridge is also interesting from the architectural perspective. Completed in Vienna Secession Style at the beginning of the 20th century, it was dedicated to Franz Joseph I of Habsburg, the ruler of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the construction new technologies and calculations were applied. The arched bridge was paved with asphalt and it was one of the first reinforced concrete bridges in Europe. New technologies bring new risks and even the architects were not exactly sure whether the bridge wouldn’t collapse. Testing it in an important city, such as Vienna, could cause a lot of scandals if breaking down, so they decided Ljubljana would do. And so it stands, successfully, to this day.
