Description

Central Urban Park

As we have already mentioned, the park together with the ensemble of the Public Office is situated on the territory of former Kaluga Kremlin. In the 16th century, a frontier with 12 turrets which were supposed to protect Moscow from Crimean Tatars’ raids was built on the high bank of Oka, between natural barriers – Berezui and Gorodensk ravines. The length of its walls was mora than 1.5 km. The walls were made of two rows of timber and the gap between them was covered with earth. In the beginning of the 17th century, Kaluga became the center of the uprising led by Ivan Bolotnikov. The rebels occupied the fortress and withstood a four-month siege of tsarist troops. During the fire of 1622, the fortress was burnt to the ground, but several decades later, another one was built in its place; unfortunately, it was wooden too. That is why in 1700 it was burnt again, this time forever. The only witness of those times is the ancient oak, which survived to these days by a miracle and is more than 500 years old. It is even in the National Record of Old-aged Trees under No. 393. The ill-wishers, however, claim that they have various modern digital devices that show that the oak is only 130 years old, but nobody believes them, of course. The park in the place of the old fortress was established at the end of the 19th century and it was called Vladimirskiy garden square in honor of the visit to Kaluga of Prince Vladimir Aleksandrovich, the third son of the emperor Aleksandr II. Among the main decorations of the park are – “Girl with the umbrella” and “Goldfish” fountains, a monument to Nikolai II, and a viewing point to Oka River. And, of course, Troitsky Cathedral, which rises in the heart of the park.
