Description

Case Western Reserve University

Case Western Reserve University – or Case – grew from the first college in northern Ohio. Today, its undergraduate schools include colleges of arts, sciences and engineering. Its graduate schools include dental, nursing and medical programs, along with a business and law school. Case is additionally affiliated with the prestigious University Hospital Medical Center, which is known for clinical practice and research. The school has come a long way since it was established almost 200 years ago. Its predecessor, Western Reserve College, was located in a small town about 26 miles from Cleveland. In the 1880s, the school decided to move where the action was. With the help of Amasa Stone, a railroad magnate, Western Reserve College relocated and became Western Reserve University.About the same time, Leonard Case, Jr. began building a secret land trust. Just four months after his death, the state issued a charter for the Case School of Applied Science. Amasa Stone's gift to Western Reserve University included money to buy land for the technical school. The Case School of Applied Science moved to University Circle in 1885. Although both schools had a cooperative agreement, their merger didn't become official until the 1960s.Euclid Avenue splits the campus. You're walking along the edge of the Florence Stone Mather Quadrangle. Like almost all the institutions you've passed, this quad is named for a famous philanthropist – one of the few named for a woman! Florence Stone Mather was the daughter of Amasa Stone, whose money brought Western Reserve College and the Case School of Applied Science to University Circle. On the other side of Euclid, you'll see the University Hospitals’ medical complex. University Hospitals is home to seven clinical and research centers: the Alfred and Norma Lerner Tower, Samuel Mather Pavilion, Lakeside Hospital, Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, MacDonald Women’s Hospital, Seidman Cancer Center and the Hanna Pavilion. You've come full circle, back to the corner of Euclid and Mayfield/Ford roads.
