Big Bridge Over the Ravine
The Big Bridge Over the Ravine was built by Vasily Bazhenov in 1778-1779 and then in 1784-1785, and was called the “bridge over the ravine, near the priests’ quarters behind the church, to the future stables.” It was intended to link the palace section of the Imperial residence with the stables, planned for the other side of the ravine. But construction work on them never began. The Big Bridge Over the Ravine is an impressive structure, both in terms of its size and architectural execution. In his report to Empress Catherine the Great, Commander-in-Chief of Moscow, Count Yakov Bryus, who visited Tsaritsyno in November 1784, described the bridge as follows: “the aqueduct is both immense and magnificent, and is therefore a worthy memory for your descendants of Your Highness, and is reminiscent of Ancient Rome.” The central part of the bridge on the ravine side has three large lancet arches and delicate rose tracery openings that are reminiscent of old Catholic churches. Thanks to the facade's rich decor, as a construction it does not look heavy or imposing. It is around 100 metres long and 15 metres high. The bridge led to the entrance to the residence from Kashirskaya Road that links Tsaritsyno and Moscow. Since the 19th century the bridge gradually fell into disrepair. In 1985-1995 it was fully restored.
