Arsenal

Rue du Puits-Saint-Pierre 8, 1204 Geneva Geneva, Switzerland

Description

Arsenal

Genevans originally used this structure as a food warehouse in the 14th century. At the start of the Reformation, it was converted into an Arsenal. For a long time, a barracks and armory were located here.Today, the space is occupied by the city archive and museum. It can tell you a lot about the rich history of Geneva. In the Arsenal, a huge number of old weapons have survived. The most significant artifacts are five Genoese guns from various periods, which still guard the entrance to the building. The pride of the townspeople are the three unique mosaics adorning the facade. They reflect major historical events in Geneva: Julius Caesar's arrival in town, the reception of the Huguenot refugees, and the first trade fair.By the way, during the Eskalat festival that I mentioned earlier, Genevans still hold a fair in front of the Arsenal. Here, you can drink delicious vegetable soup, and take home a beautiful, distinctive bowl as a souvenir. A small thing, but very nice!
