Description

Archaeological Site of St. Pierre Cathedral

The Archaeological Museum will allow you to dive into the long history of Geneva. It is located directly under the cathedral, as this is the oldest part of the city and the place of greatest interest. Its many rooms will surprise you with their exhibits, and be prepared - it is simply impossible to see everything on one visit. Each of the museum’s rooms is unique and interesting in its own way. Ancient monks' cells, the 11th century crypt, and the reception hall of the bishop - all are located within its walls. As shown by the excavations under St. Peter's Basilica, there are the remains of hidden churches here. The earliest of these dates back to the 4th century. Archaeologists have also found a well, barn, mosaic floors and burial sites of Celtic tribes. These findings tell us what was on the hill during the pre-Christian period. Now, you have a unique opportunity to learn about the ancient culture and history of Geneva.
