Description

St.Peter's Church

If you walk from Leeds Bridge and down The Calls you will reach Leeds Minster, formerly known as St Peter's Church. A church has stood at this site since the 7th century, and has been rebuilt twice: firstly in the 14th century, after a fire, and secondly in the 19th century. The new building, which is still standing, was at the time the largest new church in England built since Sir Christopher Wren's St Paul's Cathedral.During the Battle of Leeds, the church marked the end of the road for the fleeing Royalists. After failing in his attempt to motivate his men to fight for Leeds, the Royalist leader Sir William Savile and his troops attempted to flee the town. They ran along the river, roughly where The Calls is now, after they found that Leeds Bridge had been seized by Parliamentarians. They cut a path down to St Peter's Church and many tried to swim away in the river. Unfortunately, several soldiers and horses drowned in the attempt. Those that did manage to escape then fled to Methley.
