Description

Leeds Bridge

Leeds Bridge is a historic river crossing in the city. The bridge that now stands on the site dates from 1870 and is made of cast iron. However, the old bridge dated back to the 13th century, and was at the heart of the medieval town. A wool market was held there, making it a centre of trade. It led up to a large road called Bridge Gate, now called Briggate. The bridge played a central role in the Battle of Leeds. Cannons were positioned upon it, and it was the site of much of the fighting. The Parliamentarians approached the bridge from either side: Fairfax's men approaching from Woodhouse Moor, and Captain Mildmay's troops approaching from Hunslet Moor. The Royalists were eventually forced off the bridge and up to Briggate, where they were cornered.
